Description

The Chelsea is a downward-facing outdoor wall lantern built from solid copper with a clear polycarbonate lens and a single E27 bulb fitting (bulb sold separately). The copper body sits on a black powder-coated aluminium bracket featuring cast scrollwork detail, projecting 400mm from the wall. The lantern housing measures 530mm tall and 250mm wide, with a six-sided frame and a domed copper crown topped with a finial.

Designed for external wall mounting on porches, entrance ways, garages and courtyard elevations, the Chelsea provides downward-directed functional light while the copper finish and scrollwork bracket add traditional decorative character. The IP44 rating protects the electrical components from rain and dust ingress, allowing year-round outdoor installation. The maximum 60W E27 load suits LED, halogen or filament bulbs, giving flexibility to choose colour temperature and brightness.

The copper construction is left uncoated and develops a natural patina over time as it reacts with outdoor air and moisture. This patina progression shifts the finish from polished copper tones through darker browns and eventually to green verdigris, depending on climate and exposure. The black aluminium bracket is powder-coated to resist corrosion and provides a fixed tonal contrast to the changing copper. The Chelsea range includes matching pedestal lanterns, pendant lights and upward-facing wall variants, allowing coordinated lighting across driveways, pathways and garden areas.

Frequently Asked

Does the copper finish change over time?

Yes. The copper is uncoated and develops a natural patina when exposed to outdoor air and moisture. The finish darkens through browns and eventually forms green verdigris, depending on your local climate. This is a characteristic of natural copper, not a defect. If you prefer to maintain the original polished copper tone, periodic cleaning with a copper polish can slow the patina development.

What bulb does it take?

The Chelsea takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users choose a warm-white LED bulb between 6-10W and 2700K-3000K for traditional outdoor lighting that complements the copper and black finish.

Can it be used in coastal or high-moisture areas?

The IP44 rating protects the electrical components from rain and dust, making it suitable for most UK outdoor installations including coastal areas. The copper body is naturally corrosion-resistant and the black aluminium bracket is powder-coated for additional protection. In high-salt coastal environments the copper patina may develop faster.

What other fittings are available in the Chelsea range?

The Chelsea collection from Norlys includes upward-facing wall lanterns, pedestal lanterns for gate posts or driveways, and pendant lights. All share the same copper construction and scrollwork bracket design, allowing coordinated lighting across multiple exterior locations.
