Chawton Small Picture Light - Polished Nickel

The Chawton is a 182mm wide picture light built around a rectangular metal shade in polished nickel, mounted on an adjustable arm with knuckle joints that pivot the shade up and down. A single E14 bulb fitting sits inside the shade, directing light downward onto the artwork surface. The 186mm projection from the wall positions the shade 100-150mm in front of a typical framed canvas, allowing the light to wash evenly across the artwork without casting the frame shadow onto the piece itself.

Designed for smaller artworks, mirrors and photographs up to 600mm wide, the Chawton works in hallways, living rooms, bedrooms and home galleries where wall space is limited or where a larger picture light would visually dominate the frame. The adjustable knuckle joints allow the shade angle to be set during installation and adjusted later if the artwork is changed or re-hung. The wall bracket mounts to a standard UK back box or directly to the wall using two fixing points.

The polished nickel finish provides a reflective metallic surface that catches ambient room light during the day and pairs with both warm brass hardware and cooler chrome or steel fixtures in the same space. The compact 119mm height keeps the fitting discreet above smaller frames, while the rectangular shade profile mirrors the proportions of most portrait and landscape artworks. The 40W maximum rating allows for a warm-white LED candle bulb or a halogen equivalent, giving flexibility to match the colour temperature to the artwork's palette.

What size artwork does the Chawton suit?

The 182mm wide shade works best with artworks up to 600mm wide. For larger pieces, the light may not wash evenly across the full width, creating unlit edges. Elstead produces larger Chawton variants for wider artworks.

What bulb does it take?

The fitting takes a single E14 (small Edison screw) candle bulb up to 40W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a 4-6W warm-white LED candle bulb at 2700K-3000K to minimise glare and heat near the artwork.

Can the light angle be adjusted after installation?

Yes. The knuckle joints allow the shade to pivot up and down, so the light angle can be adjusted if the artwork is re-hung or replaced. The joints hold position once set and do not require tools to adjust.

How is the Chawton wired?

The wall bracket mounts to a standard UK back box or directly to the wall using two fixing points. The fitting is typically wired to a dedicated picture light circuit or a nearby switched socket outlet, depending on the room's existing electrical layout.
