Description

The Chawton is a small picture light built on a rectangular polished brass backplate with two adjustable arms supporting a 170mm-wide brass shade. The shade houses a single bulb (type and wattage to be confirmed from specification) and directs light downward and forward across the surface of a picture, print or mirror mounted directly below it.

Designed for illuminating artwork up to 600mm wide, the Chawton fits above framed prints, watercolours, family portraits and oil paintings in living rooms, hallways, dining rooms and home galleries. The adjustable knuckle joints at each arm allow the shade to be angled to reduce glare on glazed frames or to concentrate light on the centre of the artwork. The fitting mounts directly to the wall above the frame, typically 50-100mm above the top edge depending on the frame depth and the desired light spread.

The polished brass finish provides a high-gloss metallic surface that reflects ambient light when the picture light is switched off, making the fitting itself a decorative accent rather than disappearing into the wall. The finish pairs well with gold-toned frames, traditional oils in ornate surrounds, and warm-toned interiors where brass detailing appears elsewhere in the room. The rectangular backplate and shade give the fitting a traditional silhouette that reads as classical rather than contemporary.

Frequently Asked

What size artwork does this suit?

The 170mm shade width suits artwork up to approximately 600mm wide. For larger pieces, a longer picture light from the same range would provide more even illumination across the full width of the frame.

What bulb does it take?

The bulb type and wattage depend on the specific lamp holder inside the shade. Most Elstead picture lights of this style use either E14 candle bulbs or small bayonet-cap bulbs. Check the specification or contact us to confirm before purchasing bulbs separately.

Can the shade angle be adjusted after installation?

Yes. The knuckle joints at each arm allow the shade to be angled up or down after the backplate is fixed to the wall, so you can adjust the light direction to suit the artwork and reduce glare on glazed frames.

Does it need to be hardwired?

Most picture lights of this style are hardwired into a wall switch or existing lighting circuit. If you need a plug-in version, contact us to confirm whether this model is available with a cable and plug, or consider an alternative fitting.
