Chawton Medium Picture Light - Aged Brass

The Chawton is a 402mm picture light in aged brass with a rectangular shade housing two E14 bulb fittings. The shade mounts on a rectangular wall plate via two adjustable knuckle joints, allowing the light to be angled precisely onto the artwork below. Each joint pivots independently, giving control over both the tilt angle and the horizontal spread of light across the frame.

Designed to mount above framed artwork, mirrors and wall-hung displays in traditional and period interiors, the Chawton suits oil paintings, watercolours and antique prints where the frame sits proud of the wall. The 186mm projection means the shade extends far enough to cast light downward without the bulbs reflecting in glazed frames. The fitting works best above artworks 600-900mm wide, where the 402mm shade width provides even illumination across the full width of the frame.

The aged brass finish is darker and less reflective than polished brass, showing a muted golden tone with gentle patina that reads as antique rather than new. The metal construction gives the fitting a substantial feel when adjusting the knuckle joints, and the rectangular shade profile sits comfortably in rooms with other brass hardware like door handles, curtain poles and fire surrounds. The E14 fittings accept candle-style LED bulbs up to 40W, giving flexibility to choose warm-white or amber tones depending on the colour palette of the artwork.

What bulbs does it take?

The Chawton takes two E14 (small Edison screw) bulbs up to 40W each. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with warm-white LED candle bulbs at 2700K-3000K to avoid cool light reflecting off the artwork.

What size artwork does it suit?

The 402mm shade width works best above framed artwork 600-900mm wide. Narrower frames may show uneven light at the edges; wider frames may need two picture lights spaced along the top edge.

How are the knuckle joints adjusted?

Each knuckle joint on the mounting arm pivots by hand once the light is installed. The joints hold position under the weight of the shade, so you can angle the light downward onto the artwork and adjust the tilt to avoid glare on glazed frames.

Can it be used above mirrors?

Yes. The Chawton is often used above dressing mirrors in traditional interiors. The downward light reduces shadows on faces when used above a mirror at head height.
