Description

The Chawton is a 652mm picture light built from metal with an aged brass finish, designed to mount above framed artwork, mirrors and portraits. Two E14 bulbs (sold separately, up to 40W each) sit inside a cylindrical housing that projects 186mm from the wall when mounted, directing light downward onto the surface below. Adjustable knuckle joints at the wall plate allow the light bar to be angled to suit different frame depths and mounting heights.

Designed for use above medium to large artworks, gilt-framed mirrors and portrait groupings, the Chawton suits wall spaces where the picture width is 500-900mm and there is clearance above the frame for the 119mm-high back plate. The 652mm width covers most standard A1 portrait frames and medium landscape canvases without extending beyond the frame edges. The dual-bulb configuration provides even illumination across the width of the artwork rather than a single central hotspot.

The aged brass finish has a slightly darkened, matte patina that reduces glare when the light is switched on and pairs comfortably with both traditional gilt frames and warmer contemporary interiors. The metal construction is heavier than plastic picture lights, giving the fitting a solid wall presence and reducing vibration if mounted on lath-and-plaster walls. The knuckle joints can be tightened or loosened by hand to hold the chosen angle without tools.

Frequently Asked

What bulbs does it take?

The Chawton takes two E14 (small Edison screw) bulbs, each up to 40W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with warm-white LED candle bulbs between 4-6W and 2700K for artwork lighting without heat buildup on the frame.

Can the angle be adjusted after installation?

Yes. The knuckle joints at the wall plate allow the light bar to be angled by hand to direct light onto artwork of different depths and frame projections. The joints can be tightened to hold the chosen position without tools.

What size artwork does it suit?

The 652mm width works best above artwork between 500mm and 900mm wide. For narrower pieces the light bar may extend beyond the frame edges; for wider pieces consider two smaller picture lights spaced evenly along the top edge.

What clearance is needed above the frame?

The back plate is 119mm high, so you need at least 120-150mm of clear wall space above the top edge of the frame to mount the light without it sitting directly on the frame moulding. The 186mm projection also means the light needs to clear any picture rail or cornice detail.
