Description

Cawdor pairs a matt black frame with a champagne glass shade shaped like an upturned wine glass, wide at the rim and drawn in to a narrow stem where it meets the wall plate. At 15cm across it is a small fitting, and the glass is what you notice: a soft warm tint that softens a clear filament lamp behind it. A toggle switch sits on the body, so it can be worked by hand. It takes an E27 lamp, up to 20W.

It works where you want light at the wall rather than overhead: either side of a bed, along a hallway that needs marking out, in an alcove, or flanking a mirror in a dressing area. We would use a pair on a landing where a pendant would hang into the stairwell. The projection is modest, so it stays clear of shoulders in a narrow passage. Fit a suitable dimmable lamp with a compatible dimmer and the light can be brought down for the evening; both are chosen separately.

The shade is glass throughout and the metalwork is finished in a low sheen black that holds its colour against a pale wall. Champagne glass is a warm neutral, so it sits happily with brass, oak and warmer paint tones as well as plain white. For cleaning, switch off and let everything cool, then take dust off the glass with a dry microfibre cloth and lift finger marks with a barely damp one; nothing abrasive on the black. It carries a one year warranty. The same wine glass shape runs through the range as a flush fitting in matt white, antique copper, antique brass, satin nickel and polished chrome, with jar, globe and diamond glass among the alternatives. Lamps are not included.
