Cawdor Wine Glass Flush Ceiling Light 18cm Smoke - Gilt Bronze

Cawdor borrows the outline of a wine glass and turns it over: a smoke glass bowl on a short gilt bronze stem, held close against the ceiling. At 18cm across it is a small fitting, and the tinted glass takes the edge off the lamp inside rather than leaving it bare. Black detail on the metalwork answers the smoke of the shade. It runs on an E27 lamp of up to 20W, and it will dim where the lamp and the dimmer are both suited to the job.

We reach for this where a pendant would hang too low to live with: a hallway you pass through with an armful of shopping, a landing, the top of a stairwell, a small bedroom with a low ceiling. It suits flats and cottages, and it works well in multiples along a corridor, since the tinted glass reads as a soft dark spot by day and warms once switched on. Choose the lamp shape to suit the look you want: a globe fills the bowl generously, while a GLS sits lower out of sight.

The shade is glass, so it wants a gentle hand: let it cool, then wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry it off, keeping polish and sprays away from the plated metalwork. Fitted in dry rooms indoors on the usual household mains, it asks little beyond the occasional dust. It carries a one year warranty. How much space does it need below the ceiling?

It measures 180mm in diameter and 230mm in height, so it sits close enough for rooms where a hanging pendant would be in the way.

Which lamps work best in it?

It takes one E27 lamp rated up to 20W. LED versions of the GLS A60, globe G80, ST64 and tubular T45 shapes all suit the bowl, and lamps are supplied separately.

Can I put it on a dimmer?

Yes, provided you fit a dimmable lamp and a compatible dimmer. Neither is included.

How should the smoke glass be cleaned?

Switch off at the wall and let the lamp cool, then wipe the glass with a soft cloth, slightly damp if needed, and dry it. Avoid cleaning sprays on the plated stem.

Is it suitable for a bathroom or a covered porch?

No. It is intended for dry indoor rooms such as halls, landings and bedrooms.

Is the glass shade the same on every version?
