Cawdor E27 Wine Glass Pendant Light 25cm Smoke - Gilt Bronze

A slender stem opens out into a wide bowl of smoke-tinted glass, the shape borrowed from an upturned wine glass and hung the same way up. The metalwork above is finished in gilt bronze with black detailing, a warm dark tone that keeps the glass as the thing you notice. The bowl measures 25cm across, wide enough to read as a proper shade without crowding a small room, and because the glass is tinted rather than opal the lamp inside stays on show and the light comes through softened and warm.

We reach for this one over a kitchen island, in a row above a breakfast bar, or on its own in a hallway or beside a bed where a bigger shade would feel heavy. The drop adjusts and runs to 1.75m at its longest, so it suits a stairwell or a tall room as readily as an ordinary ceiling height. It takes an E27 lamp up to 20W, and decorative shapes earn their keep here: a plain GLS, a round globe or a longer tubular lamp all sit well in the open bowl. Dimming is possible if you pair a suitable lamp with a compatible dimmer.

The glass is the feature and the fittings are kept lean around it, which is why the finish matters more than usual. Wipe the bowl with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away so the tint stays even; fingerprints and dust show more readily on smoke glass than on opal, so do it now and again with the power off and the glass cold. It carries a one year warranty. The same wine glass shade is offered in this range as a flush fitting, in this gilt bronze finish and in others besides, which is useful where a hanging pendant would sit too low. Lamps are not included.

How wide is the shade?

The glass bowl is 250mm in diameter, so it reads as a small pendant and works well in multiples along a run.

How far down does it hang?

The drop is adjustable between 380mm and 1750mm, which covers everything from a low kitchen ceiling to a tall stairwell.

What lamp should I use?

An E27 lamp of up to 20W. LED versions of the GLS A60, globe G80 and G95, ST64 squirrel cage and T185 tubular shapes all suit the open bowl, and the tinted glass takes the glare off the filament.

Can I dim it?

Yes, provided you fit a dimmable lamp and a matching dimmer switch. Neither is supplied with the pendant.

How should I clean the glass?

Switch off at the wall and let the lamp go cold, then use a barely damp soft cloth followed by a dry one. Avoid sprays and anything abrasive, as they can dull the tint.
