Description

Smoke tinted glass and antique copper make a quiet pairing, and this small flush fitting holds both close against the ceiling. The globe measures 20cm across, so it reads as a soft dark sphere rather than a bright one, and the copper has a muted, slightly aged tone that sits well with older houses and warmer paint colours. It takes one E27 lamp, and because the tint is light enough to see through, the shape of the lamp shows: a plain round bulb keeps things simple, while a longer tubular lamp gives more of a filament to look at.

We reach for this where a pendant would hang too low, so a hallway, the top of the stairs, a small bedroom or a study under a shallow ceiling. The light it gives is friendly rather than hard working, which suits rooms where the main task lighting comes from lamps or from a run of downlights elsewhere. It will also dim, given a compatible lamp and dimmer switch, and that makes it a sensible choice beside a bed or in a snug used mostly in the evening.

The shade is glass and the metalwork carries the antique copper finish, which is happiest left alone by metal polish and abrasive creams. Once the lamp has gone cold, take the dust off with a dry cloth, then go over the glass with a barely damp one and dry it straight away so no marks are left in the tint. Keep it to dry rooms indoors, away from steam and splashing. It carries a one year warranty.
