Description
This broken arch mantel clock takes a shape you may know from older mantelpieces and gives it a soft sage colour, with a round cream dial set in a gold-coloured rim. The arched top sweeps down into curved shoulders, each with a short moulded ledge, and the whole clock rests on a stepped plinth with small bracket feet at either end. The dial carries clear black Arabic numerals around a fine dotted minute track, and its mottled, aged look sits nicely against the plain sage of the case. It stands 23cm tall, 32cm wide and just 7.5cm deep, large enough to read at a glance without crowding a narrow shelf.
Its natural place is a mantelpiece, but that shallow depth means it sits just as happily on a bookshelf, sideboard, dresser or desk. In a living room it gives the fireplace a calm centre; in a study, hallway or bedroom it keeps the time where you can see it from a chair. The sage green works with cream, white, natural wood and brass, and suits a country cottage, a classic townhouse or a simpler modern room equally well. Because it stands on its own base, it needs no hook or fixing, so you can move it from room to room as the seasons change.
The clock runs on one AA battery, which fits into the movement at the back, so there is no winding and no cable to hide. The back is plain black, with a small wheel on the movement for setting the time. To keep it looking its best, dust the case and dial with a soft dry cloth and avoid sprays, polish or harsh cleaners. For a classic arrangement, stand it at the centre of the mantelpiece with a pair of candlesticks or a small vase of greenery either side, and let the sage pick up the green of the leaves.
