Description

The Bedford is a 461mm outdoor wall lantern with a black composite frame, clear seedy glass panels and a single E27 bulb fitting rated to 60W. The composite material resists cracking and warping in both high heat and freezing temperatures, making it more durable than painted aluminium or powder-coated steel in extreme UK weather. The IP44 rating allows the lantern to be fitted in exposed positions subject to rain splash and moisture.

Designed for front doors, porch entries, garage sides and covered patios, the Bedford mounts on a wall bracket with a 279mm projection from the wall face. The clear seedy glass creates a textured, slightly vintage appearance when lit, diffusing the bulb without fully concealing it. The black finish works across traditional Georgian and Victorian facades as well as contemporary brick and render exteriors where a lantern style fits the architectural context.

The frame uses a composite polymer rather than die-cast metal, which eliminates the risk of rust bleeding through painted finishes after several years of exposure. The 254mm width and 461mm height give the lantern a substantial presence on larger wall areas without overwhelming typical single-storey porch walls. The pagoda-style roof cap and scroll bracket detail reference classical carriage lamp designs while the clean lines and matte black finish keep the overall form simple.

What does the IP44 rating mean for installation?

IP44 means the lantern is protected against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashing from any direction. It can be fitted in exposed positions subject to rain but is not submersible or suitable for direct hose-down cleaning.

What bulb does it take?

The Bedford takes one E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair it with a 6-10W warm-white LED filament bulb at 2700K to suit the vintage seedy glass aesthetic.

Is the composite material more durable than metal?

Composite polymer does not rust, corrode or require repainting. It withstands freezing and high heat better than painted aluminium or powder-coated steel, both of which can chip and expose bare metal to moisture over time.

What wall fixings are needed?

The lantern mounts via a rear wall bracket. Use wall plugs and screws suitable for your wall type (brick, render, block). The combined weight of the fitting and a standard LED bulb is approximately 1.5-2kg, so standard masonry fixings are sufficient on brick or block walls.
