Description

The Beacon Type B disabled refuge outstation is a wall-mounted emergency communication point built to BS5839-9:2021 standards for fire evacuation systems in multi-storey buildings. The unit provides duplex audio communication between a refuge point and a master control station, allowing two-way voice contact during an emergency. The IP66-rated housing protects the internal electronics from dust ingress and high-pressure water jets, making it suitable for outdoor refuge points, stairwells and exposed locations.

Designed for installation in designated refuge areas where building occupants with mobility impairments may wait for assistance during evacuation, the outstation operates hands-free once the call button is pressed. An LED indicator on the front panel shows call status, confirming when contact has been established with the control room. The high-volume ringer ensures the unit is audible in noisy environments or when background alarm sounders are active.

The outstation measures 245mm square with a 150mm projection from the wall, and the green faceplate with white and blue graphics provides clear visual identification of the refuge point function. The lockable front cover prevents tampering while allowing authorised access for maintenance. The unit weighs 2.2kg and is designed for surface mounting on masonry, plasterboard or metal stud partitions using the rear fixing points.

Frequently Asked

What does Type B configuration mean?

Type B outstations are designed for two-way communication between the refuge point and a master control station. They provide duplex audio, meaning both parties can speak and listen simultaneously without needing to press a button to talk.

Where should this outstation be installed?

The outstation should be mounted in designated refuge areas as specified in the building's fire safety plan, typically in protected stairwells or fire-rated lobbies adjacent to evacuation routes. Installation height and positioning must comply with BS5839-9:2021 and Approved Document M accessibility requirements.

What does IP66 rating provide?

IP66 means the housing is fully dust-tight and protected against high-pressure water jets from any direction. This makes the outstation suitable for outdoor refuge points, open stairwells and locations exposed to weather or cleaning with pressure washers.

Does it require a separate power supply?

The outstation typically connects to a central disabled refuge system controller which provides power and audio routing. Wiring requirements and power specifications are detailed in the installation manual. The system should be connected to the building's emergency power supply to remain operational during mains failure.
