Three E27 lamps sit inside a single deep drum shade here, so the light gathers into one soft pool rather than scattering across the ceiling. The shade measures 45cm across and is dual faux silk: a quiet taupe on the outside, with a halo gold lining that warms everything passing through it. Suspension, ceiling plate and lamp holders are finished in antique brass, a darkened gold that stops the whole thing looking brash. Sharing one shade between the lamps gives real output from a single fitting.

We reach for this over a dining table, where the width suits a family table and the gold lining throws colour down onto plates and glasses. It is at home in a hall with decent ceiling height too, or above a reading chair in a bedroom. The drop can be set short or long, so a low table and a tall stairwell are both catered for. It dims, given lamps and a dimmer chosen to suit, though neither of those comes with it. Modest lamps are plenty behind faux silk, so there is no need to load it up.

The frame is metal throughout, and the shade is built as a faux silk outer with a metallic-look lining. Dust settles on faux silk rather than marking it, so a soft brush now and then is usually all it asks, and the brasswork wants a dry cloth and no polish. Keep it to dry rooms indoors, well away from steam and splashes. Three E27 lamps, up to 20W each. LED GLS A60 lamps are the sensible choice and suit the shade shape well. Lamps are supplied separately.

How far down does it hang?

The drop runs from 375mm at its shortest to 3295mm at its longest, so it copes with both a normal ceiling and a stairwell.

Can I put it on a dimmer?

Yes, provided the lamps are dimmable and paired with a compatible dimmer. No dimmer is included.

Is it suitable for a bathroom or a covered porch?

No. This one is rated for dry interior rooms only, so keep it to living rooms, halls, dining rooms and bedrooms.

What colour is the shade exactly?

Taupe on the outer face with a halo gold interior, so the lamps pick up a warm metallic glow from inside.
