Description

The shade does most of the work here: a small dual-layer drum in faux silk, taupe outside with halo gold within, so the light warms as it falls. It sits on a slender antique brass backplate and arm, the finish gently aged rather than bright, so the metal looks older than it is. A rocker switch on the body means the light is turned on and off where it sits, with no reaching for a wall switch. At 12cm across, the shade stays modest.

We keep this in mind for bedsides, since it leaves the table free for books and a glass of water. It also works along a landing, in a shallow alcove or beside a reading chair, anywhere a lamp on a surface would only get knocked. Fit an E14 candle lamp of up to 20W, and choose a dimmable one with a compatible dimmer if you want to drop the level in the evening. A single warm lamp behind taupe silk gives a soft pool of light rather than broad room light, so it suits winding down more than close work.

The metalwork is finished in antique brass, warm and a little muted, and it sits happily with oak, rattan and walls in chalky colours.
