Description

Fabric softens a wall light in a way glass never quite manages, and this small one leans on that: a dual faux silk shade in nude beige, with a paler moonlight tone to the inner face, carried on slim matt black metalwork. The shade is taller than it is wide, which keeps the whole thing compact and quiet on the wall. A rocker switch sits on the fitting itself, so it works independently of the room circuit. It takes a single candle lamp on an E14 socket, and we would put an LED candle in it.

It suits the places a larger fitting would crowd. We reach for one like this beside a bed, where having the switch on the fitting saves getting up, and in pairs either side of a mirror or a chimney breast. A shade of 12cm across keeps the projection modest, so it also earns its place in a hallway or on a landing where people pass close by. The warm neutral of the fabric sits happily alongside painted plaster, oak and brass, and the black metal gives it enough definition not to disappear. Fit a dimmable lamp with a compatible dimmer if you want the level down in the evening.

Construction is plain and sound: a metal frame and backplate in matt black, matt rather than glossy so reflections and fingerprints stay unobtrusive, with the fabric shade set out from the wall. Keep dust off the faux silk with a soft brush or a vacuum on its lowest setting, and wipe the black metal with a barely damp cloth when it needs it, never a solvent.
