Description

A small wall light for one candle lamp, with matt black metalwork and a faux silk shade in grey lined in a pale laminate that pushes light forward and down. The shade measures 12cm across, so the whole fitting stays tight to the wall and never crowds a narrow room. A rocker switch sits on the fitting itself, which means the light can be turned on and off where you stand rather than from the room switch.

We reach for it in bedrooms, usually as a pair either side of the bed, where a table lamp would swallow most of the bedside surface and its cable would trail. It earns its place just as well beside a reading chair, along a landing, or in a guest room that wants a soft pool of light and little else. The E14 socket takes a candle lamp, and we would fit an LED candle here. If you want the level to come down of an evening, choose a dimmable lamp, as the dimming is a matter of the lamp rather than the fitting. The maximum is 20W.

The black is a flat matt that holds its depth under warm lamplight rather than throwing back highlights, and the grey fabric softens the edges of the light where a metal shade would harden them. For the shade, a soft brush or a low-suction upholstery head is kinder than a cloth, which can drag on faux silk; the metal only wants a barely damp wipe, followed by a dry one, with the power off and the lamp cold. It carries a one year warranty. Grey against black is a quiet combination that sits happily with painted walls, warm timber and darker joinery, and because the shade is compact it reads as part of the wall rather than an object on it. Lamps are not included.
