Banyan E14 Wall Light 35.5cm High Black - Satin Nickel

The shade here is a slim drum in black faux silk, just 12cm across, lined in a white laminate that throws light back out into the room. It sits on satin nickel metalwork, with a plain backplate and a short arm that holds the shade close to the wall. A rocker switch on the body lets you work it from where you stand, rather than crossing the room for the wall switch.

Switched wall lights like this one earn their place either side of a bed, each giving its own reading light and leaving the bedside table clear for a book and a glass of water. They do just as well along a hallway, in a small study, or flanking a mirror in a dressing area. Dust the shade with a soft brush and give the metalwork an occasional wipe, with the light off and cool. It takes an E14 candle lamp, and an LED candle is what we would fit; keep to 20W or under. Dimming is possible if you choose a dimmable lamp, though no dimmer comes with it. Keep it to dry rooms indoors, well away from splashes. It carries a one year warranty. What size is the shade?

The shade measures 12cm wide. Overall the fitting stands 355mm tall and projects 180mm from the wall, so it stays tight to the surface in a narrow hallway or beside a bed.

Which lamp should I use?

An E14 candle lamp, ideally an LED candle in the C35 shape, up to a maximum of 20W. Lamps are supplied separately.

Can I dim it?

Yes, with a dimmable lamp and a compatible dimmer. Neither is included, so choose the lamp with dimming in mind if that matters to you.

Does it have its own switch?

It does. A rocker switch is fitted to the body, so you can turn it on and off at the light itself.

How do I keep the shade looking good?

A soft brush or a lint roller lifts dust from the faux silk. Avoid damp cloths and sprays on the fabric; the satin nickel metal can be wiped with a dry cloth once the lamp has cooled.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated for dry indoor rooms only, so bedrooms, hallways and studies rather than bathrooms or anywhere exposed to steam.
