Description

Banyan pairs a champagne gold body with a black faux silk shade, and the two do most of the work between them. The shade measures 12cm across, small enough to sit close against a wall without crowding it, and the white laminate lining pushes a warm, even light back into the room. An E14 candle lamp sits behind the fabric, so what you get is a soft glow rather than a hard one, which is what the shade is there for.

We reach for this where a bedside table is too small to take a lamp: it puts light at reading height and keeps the surface clear for books and a glass of water. It works just as well flanking a mirror, running along a landing, or set either side of a fireplace. A rocker switch on the fitting means you can turn it off without crossing the room, and it stands about 18cm out from the wall, clear of an open door or a passing shoulder in a narrow hallway.

The frame is metal finished in a soft champagne gold, warmer than brass and quieter than chrome, and the shade is faux silk with a laminate lining that holds its shape. Keep the fabric looking fresh with a soft brush or the upholstery head of a vacuum, and give the metal a dry cloth once the power is off and the lamp has gone cold. It carries a one year warranty. Candle lamps are not included, and we would choose a warm white LED candle lamp to sit kindly behind the black. The proportions suit flanking a bed, a mirror or a chimney breast.
