Description

A compact switched wall light in antique brass, dressed with a black faux silk shade of 12cm. The finish has the warm, slightly dulled tone of aged brass rather than a bright polish, and the shade is lined in white so the light bounces forward rather than being swallowed by the dark fabric. A rocker switch sits on the body, which means it can be turned on and off at the fitting without reaching for the wall switch. It takes an E14 candle lamp, and will dim if you pair it with a dimmable lamp.

We think of this as a bedside light first: low output, a soft pool of light, and a switch under your hand when you want to stop reading. It suits a narrow hallway too, or the wall beside a favourite chair, where a floor lamp would crowd the space. Wired for indoor rooms only, it is happiest away from splashes and steam, so a bathroom is not its place. We would fit an LED candle lamp of a warm colour and keep it well within the 20W ceiling.

The shade is a laminate-backed faux silk on a black ground with white inside, and the metalwork carries the antique brass through the backplate, stem and lamp holder. Keep it simple in use: lift dust from the fabric with a soft brush rather than a damp cloth, and give the brass an occasional buff so the highlights stay lively. It carries a one year warranty. Two of these either side of a bed read neatly, and the black shade holds its own against a papered or deep-coloured wall. Lamps are not included.
