Description

Banyan is a small switched wall light finished in satin nickel and supplied without a shade, so the shade is yours to choose. The holder takes an E14 candle lamp, and a rocker switch sits on the body, which means the light is turned on and off at the fitting rather than from across the room. At 11cm wide it keeps tight to the wall and asks for very little space. We stock it as a plain working fitting rather than a decorative one, and it is one we reach for when the shade is doing all the styling. Candle shades are optional and sold separately: see our lamp shades.

It earns its place beside a bed, where a switch under your hand saves reaching for anything else, and it works just as well in a spare room, a study alcove or a narrow hallway where a table lamp has nowhere to stand. A pair either side of a headboard is the arrangement we see most often. We would put an LED candle lamp in it, up to 20W, and if you plan to run it from a dimmer, buy a dimmable lamp to match. Keep it to dry rooms indoors.

The satin nickel finish is a soft, low-shine grey that sits quietly against pale walls and painted woodwork, and it shows fingerprints far less than polished chrome. Keeping it right takes very little: switch off first, go over the finish with a dry microfibre cloth, and leave polishes, creams and cleaning sprays alone, as they can dull the plating. It carries a one year warranty. Because it comes bare, it changes character entirely with the shade you put on it, from a small pleated candle shade for something traditional to a plain drum for a quieter look. No shade or lamp is included.
