Description

Five arms curve out from a central stem, each carrying a candle lamp, and the whole arrangement sits beneath a broad fabric drum. The shade measures 60cm across, which spreads light wide and soft rather than sending it down in a tight column. Its faux silk is raw cocoa on the outer face, with champagne gold warming the light that passes through. Lampholders are E14 for candle lamps of up to 20W apiece, and the hanging height can be set high or low depending on the room it goes into.

It is a light for rooms with space to spare: above a long dining table, in a wide hallway, or centred in a sitting room where a smaller shade would look lost. The lamps together give an even, companionable glow across a good stretch of floor, and the level can be taken down for the evening with dimmable lamps on a compatible dimmer. We reach for a multi arm pendant of this sort when a lone shade leaves the corners of a room dim. It belongs in dry, heated rooms indoors, well away from bathrooms and porches.

The metal is finished in champagne gold, so the fitting reads as fabric first, with the arms catching the light at the edges of the shade. For care, dust the silk with a soft brush or a vacuum on its lowest setting, and give the metalwork a dry cloth once the lamps have gone cold; keep damp cloths and sprays off the fabric altogether.
