Description

Five slender arms rise inside a wide, shallow drum of cream organza, each one finished in champagne gold and tipped with an E14 socket. At 60cm across, the shade is broad and low, so light spreads sideways and down through the fabric rather than pooling in a single bright patch. Organza carries a faint sheen and just enough translucence to soften the glow, and the warm metal reads through it as a hint of colour rather than a hard shape. The drop is adjustable when the fitting goes up, from tucked close under the ceiling to hanging well down over a table.

We reach for this one over a dining table or in a bedroom where a narrow pendant would look mean against the width of the room, and it suits a landing or a wide hallway equally well. The five lamps together give plenty of light for eating and talking, and because the fitting takes dimmable lamps and a separate dimmer, the level can be brought right down for the end of an evening. It belongs in dry rooms indoors, away from steam and splashing, so a bathroom or a covered porch is not the place for it. Small candle lamps in warm white are what we would fit; anything oversized will press against the fabric.

The frame is metal in a champagne gold finish, warmer and softer than a bright brass, and the shade is cream organza over it. Fabric this fine wants a light touch: run a soft brush or the upholstery nozzle over it now and then, and keep water and sprays away from the weave. The metalwork needs no more than a dry cloth. It carries a one year warranty. Cream and gold sit happily with pale walls, oak and linen, and lamps are not included.
