Balbo 4 Light Semi-Flush Ceiling Light - Nickel with Cognac Glass

The Balbo is a 380mm semi-flush ceiling light with four G9 bulbs housed inside a cluster of cognac-tinted glass petals arranged around a polished nickel central canopy. Each petal is a hand-blown glass dome that overlaps the next, creating a layered organic form that sits 225mm below the ceiling when fitted. The cognac glass tint diffuses the light into a warm amber glow rather than white light, softening the output and reducing glare.

Designed for rooms with ceiling heights between 2.3m and 2.6m where a pendant would hang too low but a flush mount would provide insufficient drop for visual presence, the Balbo works in bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and dining rooms requiring ambient rather than task lighting. The 380mm diameter suits rooms of 12-18m² without dominating the ceiling plane. The IP20 rating restricts use to dry indoor locations only.

The nickel frame is a polished chrome-nickel alloy that reflects ambient light without the high-contrast brightness of pure chrome. Each cognac glass petal measures approximately 120mm across and is mouth-blown, so tonal variation and subtle imperfections in the glass thickness are normal. The four G9 bulbs (sold separately) sit behind the glass and are not directly visible when the fitting is viewed from below, so the light source is concealed and the glass petals themselves become the lit object.

The Balbo is part of Maytoni's contemporary decorative lighting range and carries a 2-year manufacturer warranty. The fitting weighs approximately 1.8kg and mounts to a standard UK ceiling rose or junction box with the fixings supplied in the box.

Product Manual

What bulbs does the Balbo take?

The fitting takes four G9 capsule bulbs up to 28W each. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with 3-5W LED G9 bulbs in 2700K-3000K warm white to match the cognac glass tint.

Is the cognac glass consistent between fittings?

The glass petals are hand-blown, so the exact depth of the cognac tint and minor variations in glass thickness differ between individual fittings. This is characteristic of mouth-blown glass and is not a defect.

What ceiling height does it suit?

The Balbo sits 225mm below the ceiling when installed. It works best in rooms with ceiling heights between 2.3m and 2.6m where a pendant would be too low but a flush mount would lack visual presence.

Can it be used in a bathroom?

No. The IP20 rating means the fitting is not protected against moisture and must only be used in dry indoor locations. For bathrooms, you need a fitting rated IP44 or higher depending on the zone.
