Description

A smooth oval in gypsum, primed white and ready for paint, this is one of the quieter shapes in the Alina range. At 18cm wide it sits neatly on a wall without crowding it, and the projection is shallow enough to keep it out of the way in a corridor. It takes a single G9 capsule, and we would reach for an LED here rather than a halogen. There is no switch on the body, so it works from the room switch; if you want it to dim, fit dimmable lamps.

Paintable gypsum earns its keep where you want light without hardware on show. Painted in the same shade as the plaster around it, the oval reads as part of the wall and only the light gives it away. It suits a wall you would rather not interrupt. We fit these in hallways and up stair walls, in bedrooms either side of a bed, and in living rooms where a lamp on a table would be one thing too many. Because it is intended for dry indoor rooms, keep it out of bathrooms and away from the porch.

Gypsum takes paint beautifully but it is a soft, porous material, so treat the surface as you would a plastered wall: dust with a dry soft brush or the corner of a cloth, and leave water and sprays alone. Marks and scuffs disappear under a fresh coat of emulsion. It carries a one year warranty. The range runs to square and round wall lights and to cone, cylinder and dome pendants in the same paintable finish, so a whole room can be kept to one surface. Lamps are not included.
