Description

Cast in gypsum and finished in a paintable white, this slim cylinder sends light both up and down from a narrow column, giving a wall two soft pools rather than one flat wash. Two GU10 lamps sit behind the open ends, each taking up to 25W. The plaster surface can be left as it comes or painted in the same shade as the wall behind it, so the fitting settles into the plasterwork instead of standing apart from it.

It is one we reach for in pairs, either side of a bed or spaced along a hallway, where the twin beams draw a rhythm up the wall. It also does quiet work on a stair wall, beside a chimney breast, or on a narrow landing where a wider shade would crowd the space. There is no switch on the body, so it runs from the room's own wall switch or circuit, and it will dim happily provided the lamps you choose are dimmable. We would put a small LED reflector lamp in each end for a tidy, controlled beam.

Gypsum gives the piece its chalky, matt surface and a reassuring density in the hand, and the shape is kept plain so nothing competes with the light itself. Keep a soft dusting brush for the surface; plaster does not take kindly to water or solvents, and small marks are better painted over than scrubbed. It carries a one year warranty. The range runs wider than this cylinder alone: we also stock oval, square, round and sphere wall lamps in the same paintable gypsum, along with cone, cylinder, rectangular and dome pendants, so a hall and a stairwell can be dressed from one family.
