Description

The Alderley is a 305mm-wide art deco wall uplighter built from a vintage bronze metal frame and leaded glass panels in cream, pale blue and textured clear glass. Two E14 bulbs (sold separately) sit inside the tapering shade, casting light upward through the glass and outward through the lower opening. The leaded glass design features vertical lines radiating from a central chevron motif, with a textured glass panel at the centre that scatters light into surface reflections.

Designed for hallways, living rooms and bedrooms where ambient upward wash lighting is needed, the Alderley suits period interiors, traditional homes and contemporary spaces where art deco detailing adds character. The 128mm projection from the wall keeps the fitting relatively shallow, so it works on narrower hallway walls without obstructing movement. The upward light direction softens the effect of low ceilings by drawing the eye vertically and reduces direct glare compared to downward wall lights.

The vintage bronze finish is a dark, oil-rubbed metal with warm brown undertones rather than a bright polished surface. The leaded glass technique uses thin metal cames (lead strips) to join each section of coloured and textured glass, creating visible dark lines that define the art deco geometry. The pale blue glass panels shift in tone from soft powder blue when unlit to a brighter aqua when the bulbs are on, while the textured centre panel catches and refracts light into a sparkling effect. The 40W maximum rating per bulb (80W total) accommodates both traditional candle bulbs and modern LED equivalents.

Frequently Asked

What bulbs does it take?

The Alderley takes two E14 (small Edison screw) bulbs up to 40W each. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with warm-white LED candle bulbs at 4-6W and 2700K to match the vintage bronze tone and art deco aesthetic.

Can this be fitted on a low ceiling hallway?

Yes. The upward light direction makes it well-suited to hallways with low ceilings, as it bounces light off the ceiling rather than directing it downward into eyes at standing height. The 128mm projection from the wall is shallow enough for narrower hallways without obstructing movement.

How does the blue glass look when unlit?

When unlit, the blue glass panels appear as a soft, pale powder blue. When the bulbs are switched on, the glass shifts to a brighter aqua tone due to the light passing through the coloured glass from behind.

Is the glass real leaded glass?

Yes. The Alderley uses traditional leaded glass construction, where individual sections of coloured and textured glass are joined by thin lead cames (metal strips). This creates the visible dark lines that define the art deco geometric pattern.
