Description

A small black lamp base with a square footprint of 80mm and a height of 100mm, made to sit under a shade or, more often, to show off the lamp itself. The E27 socket sits proud at the top, and an inline switch on the flex means you are not reaching behind furniture to turn it off. Nothing about it competes for attention; it gives a lamp somewhere to stand. At this size it tucks in among books and picture frames rather than crowding them.

It earns its place on a bedside table, a shelf of books, a hall console or a windowsill where a taller lamp would look overbearing. Because the base is compact, the choice of lamp does the styling: a plain GLS for reading light, or one of the larger decorative globes, an ST64 or a tubular type, where you want the filament on show. We would reach for a fat globe here and keep the wattage modest, up to 40W. Fit a dimmable lamp, pair it with a compatible dimmer and the level comes down for evenings. Keep the flex run tidy and the switch within reach of where you sit.

The body is finished in black throughout and double insulated. Wipe the base with a dry cloth now and then, and if fingerprints show, a barely damp one, with the lamp switched off and cool first. It is meant for dry rooms indoors on a standard household supply. It carries a one year warranty. We also stock the same base in wood if black is too stark for the room, and the two sit happily together on a long shelf. Lamps are not included.
