The Aethera pendant light fitting is the body of a modular light: a black ceiling rose, a black flex and a black E27 lamp holder, sold without its shade. On its own it is not a complete light. To finish it, you add one of the range's lampshades or diffuser discs, sold separately, along with an E27 bulb of your choice, since no bulb comes in the box either. The cylindrical lamp holder is a slim 45mm across, and the drop adjusts from 327mm to 2045mm, so the shade can hang close to the ceiling or low over a table. It is rated IP20, which settles where it belongs: indoors, in dry rooms only.

Because the body stays the same and the shade sets the look, this is a fitting for anyone who likes to style a room in two steps. Hang it over a dining table, where the long drop lets the light sit low above the people seated there, or keep it short in a hallway or on a landing where the ceiling is modest. The black finish looks crisp and quiet against a pale ceiling, and it lets whichever shade you choose take the attention. Later, if your taste changes, you swap the shade rather than the whole light.
