Description

A square frame in antique brass, set across its face with prism-cut crystal, holding five candle lamps close behind the glass. Because it sits flush to the ceiling it gives back very little height, while the faceted crystal throws small points of light across the ceiling and down the walls as well as onto the floor. At 46cm across it has enough presence to hold the centre of a room without dominating it. Candle-shaped LEDs on E14 sockets suit it best, and with dimmable lamps and a suitable switch the light drops away softly.

We would fit this where a hanging light would be a nuisance: a hallway with a low ceiling, a landing where a door swings close by, or a small dining room in a flat. It suits rooms that already carry a little warm metal, brass door furniture or aged handles, and it reads as well against a painted ceiling as a papered one. Keep it to dry rooms indoors on ordinary household mains; a bathroom or a covered porch is not the place for it.

The metalwork is warm and aged rather than bright, and the crystal is cut with flat facets that catch light at their edges. For dusting, a soft brush or a blast of air lifts grit from the facets better than a cloth can, and the brass asks for nothing more than a dry wipe, never a metal polish. It carries a one year warranty. Warm white lamps flatter the brass, while cooler ones can make it look grey. We stock the square in smaller sizes and in polished chrome, and there are round versions with sphere crystal alongside matching wall lights. Lamps are not included.
