Description
This square glass trinket box is a keepsake made for a 50th birthday. A shiny silver metal frame holds clear glass panels on every side and across the lid. At the centre of the lid sits a round metal badge, raised in relief, reading "50th BIRTHDAY" above a small row of three stars. A ring of finer lettering around its edge counts the fifty years in months, weeks, days, hours and minutes. It is a 15cm box, and because the glass lets you see straight through, whatever you keep inside stays on show.
It sits happily on a dressing table, a bedroom chest of drawers, a bookshelf or a mantelpiece, anywhere a small piece of silver-tone metal and glass will catch the light. Inside there is room for the little things that come with a big birthday: a ring or a pair of earrings, a folded card, a ticket stub, a pressed flower from the party or a photograph trimmed to fit. As a birthday gift it does two jobs at once. It marks the number on the lid, and it gives the treasures from the day somewhere to live.
The lid is hinged at the back and closes onto a small round catch at the front. The box stands on four little ball feet that lift it clear of the surface. The metal frame runs along every edge, so the glass is held neatly at each corner. To keep it bright, dust it with a soft dry cloth and wipe the glass with a slightly damp cloth, then dry it straight away so the metal stays free of marks. We like to tuck a small present inside before wrapping, so the box is opened twice: once for itself and once for what it holds.
