Description

A single data point behind a screwless orange faceplate, wired for Cat 5 and Cat 6 network cabling. The face is square, 88mm across, and the outer plate clips on, leaving the front clear apart from the module set into it. The orange runs through the moulding rather than sitting on top as paint, so the point stays easy to pick out in a cupboard, a rack cabinet or a shadowy corner of a study. It takes an ordinary patch lead.

We reach for coloured plates when a house has more than a couple of network runs and someone will one day need to tell them apart: orange for the office run, plain white for the rest, and no guesswork later. It suits a desk position in a home office, a media unit where a television or games console wants a wired connection, or a landing where a wireless access point lives. Being a data circuit at low voltage, it carries no mains and sits quite happily on the same wall as a socket or a television point without any risk of confusion. Good for anyone finally tidying up a house full of trailing network leads.

The plate and cover are moulded ABS, which takes knocks better than a thin pressed plate and holds its colour in daylight. It is rated for dry indoor positions and for data circuits only, so keep it clear of bathrooms and unheated outbuildings where damp gathers. To clean, a barely damp cloth followed by an immediate dry is all it wants; solvents, bleach and cream cleaners will dull the surface and are best kept well away from it. It carries a ten year warranty. Set among plain white plates, the orange reads as a deliberate mark rather than an oddity, which is exactly the point of it. Patch leads are bought separately.
