Description

A glass table lamp, 39cm tall, in clear. At 13cm wide it is about the width of a laptop.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. Cast and wrought iron are heavy by nature, and that weight is doing a job: it keeps the piece where it is put rather than shifting every time something brushes past. Iron also holds a hand-worked line that a machine-pressed metal cannot. The shade is included rather than sold alongside, which is worth checking against anything cheaper.

Wiring is for 1 E27 lamp up to 10-12W LED, supplied separately. E27 is the standard screw fitting, so a replacement is a supermarket purchase rather than a specialist one. It is not dimmable, which means you choose the warmth at the bulb rather than at the switch: a 2700K bulb will do more here than a dimmer would. The cable is black, with an in-line switch you can reach without groping behind furniture, and a uk 3 pin with 3 amp fuse already fitted. The head adjusts, so you can aim the light at a book rather than a ceiling.

The base is felted, which matters if it is going on a polished or waxed surface. It weighs 1.2kg, which is enough to stay put when the flex is tugged. A GLS shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

A pair reads as deliberate rather than repetitive, and at this width two will sit either side of a bed without crowding the table.
