This round ceramic Christmas ornament pairs a bold cartoon portrait with a much-quoted line: "Welcome to the party, pal". The words run twice around a white rim in heavy black capitals, divided by small dots, and circle a blue centre. Inside it, a grinning, battle-scarred hero with tousled dark hair and a bruised, grazed face crawls forward in a vest, holding up a flip-top lighter with a small flame. The colours are bright and the lettering clear. It measures 7.3cm across and 0.5cm deep, a flat disc that sits neatly among other decorations.

A red twisted cord, threaded through a small hole at the top, lets it hang from a branch of the tree, and it works just as well on a door handle, a cupboard knob, a mantelpiece garland or a peg rail through the festive season.
