Description

A chest of drawers, 100cm tall, in grey. At 50cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door. In a bedroom it wants to be reachable without opening a wardrobe door into it, which is a check worth making with a tape measure.

A cool colour recedes: it makes a piece read as further away and a room as larger, which is why cool tones suit small spaces better than their reputation for coldness suggests. The timber here is a veneer: a thin layer of the real wood, or a printed reproduction of it, laid over a stable board core. That is why the grain runs continuously across a panel this wide, which solid timber of the same width could not do without moving. The strength is in the section, not the bulk: steel holds its shape at a thickness that would flex in almost anything else. It is heavier than aluminium, which is a virtue indoors and a consideration if the piece has to be moved often. The body is MDF under the finish, which is what keeps a piece this size affordable and dimensionally stable — MDF does not move with the seasons the way solid timber does. 5 drawers. An anti-tip wall strap is included, and on a tall piece it should be used.

Furniture fails at the joints and the runners long before the surface wears out, which is why the way a piece is put together matters more than what it is finished with. Pull a drawer fully out if you can. Runners are where a cheap chest gives itself away.
