Description

The Tonvorne is a single wall spotlight in black, built on a round steel backplate with a short arm that holds a cylindrical fabric shade at an angle. The shade is black on the outside and gold inside, and a band of small cross-shaped cut-outs runs around its open end, so a little of that warm gold shows through the black. It measures 12cm in diameter and projects 14cm from the wall, so it stays compact. It takes one E27 bulb, not included, of up to 28W, and carries an IP20 rating, which settles where it belongs: indoors, in a dry room.

In a bedroom it makes a tidy reading light: fit one either side of the bed and the bedside table stays clear for a clock, a book and a glass of water. As a spotlight it sends its light in one direction, so it works just as well picking out a picture or a shelf in a living room, hallway or study. When the bulb is lit, the gold inside catches it and the cut-outs let small points of light through the side of the shade, so the fitting has a little detail. It suits anyone who wants a practical spot of light on the wall without giving up floor or table space.

The body is black steel and the shade is fabric, black on the outside and gold on the inside. There is no switch on the fitting itself: it runs from the wall switch in the room, on 220-240V mains. As it is wired into the mains, it should be installed by a qualified electrician, and the installation instructions come as a download. Choose an E27 bulb of 28W or less; a warm white bulb sits nicely with the gold of the shade. Packed, it weighs 0.503KG, which makes it easy to handle on a stepladder.
