The Tolmere grand pendant is the wider of the two spirals, a ribbon of metal in a natural finish coiled out to 1160mm across. At that size it becomes the thing you look at when you walk into a room, yet the open form keeps it light on the eye rather than heavy overhead. The light source is built in, so there are no lamps to buy or replace, and the fitting dims through a switch rated for LED loads. Overall height adjusts between 700mm and 1860mm, and at 4.5kg the ceiling mounting point should be checked before fitting.

This one needs a big room to make sense. Over a long dining table of 1.5m or more, in a double height hallway, above a stairwell or centred in an open plan kitchen and living space, the 1160mm spread reads as generous rather than overbearing. Hung in a room with a standard ceiling it will dominate, so measure before committing. Where there is height to play with, the long adjustable drop lets you set it low enough to be read as a single form from the floor below, and the spiral shifts as you move around it, which is the point of the shape.

The spiral is metal, finished natural so the surface stays understated at any scale. An open form gathers dust along the upper edges of the ribbon, so a soft dry cloth or a feather duster every few weeks keeps it looking right; water, polishes and solvent cleaners should be kept away from the finish. Set the drop before final fixing and use a mounting point that is rated for the weight. If the space is smaller, the large Tolmere pendant at 850mm across covers the same ground on a more modest scale.
