This is one of the smaller bases in the Sunset range: a plain white round rim, recessed into the ceiling so that only a neat circle shows. The visible face measures 85mm across, with 87mm of body behind it, which keeps it modest in a room where a bigger trim would start to draw the eye. It is a non-electrical base rather than a complete fitting, so the light source and its gear are chosen to suit the scheme rather than dictated by the housing.

We reach for the small sizes when a run of downlights should read as a series of quiet points rather than a row of holes, so think hallways, the length of a landing, over a worktop, or washing down a wall of shelving. It suits anyone putting a lighting scheme together in stages, since the base can be settled early and the output decided nearer the end. Against a white ceiling the rim all but disappears, which is usually the point in a room where the light matters more than the thing making it.

The white finish is applied evenly across the rim and the body, and the whole piece is light in the hand. Keep it looking right by running a dry cloth around the rim whenever you dust the ceiling; leave solvents and cream cleaners alone, as they will take the sheen off white long before dust ever will.
