Description

Sunset is a range of plain round recessed bases, and this is one of the smaller ones: 85mm across the visible face, dropping into a 75mm aperture. It is non-electric, meaning it is a housing rather than a wired light in its own right, so the light itself comes from the module or fitting it carries. The black finish keeps a ceiling quiet, reading as a soft shadow rather than a bright ring, and we tend to point people towards it where the plaster is a deeper shade or the ceiling already has plenty going on.

Small apertures like this one earn their keep in numbers. A run along a kitchen ceiling, set above the worktop line, spreads light evenly without any single fitting taking over the room. The same base suits a hallway, a landing, a study or the ceiling above a stair, anywhere the opening wants to stay modest and discreet. We reach for the smaller sizes when a ceiling sits low and a wider bezel would start to look heavy overhead, and we often mix two sizes through a house so the general lighting and the accent lighting share one family of detail.

The base is light in the hand and the black is carried evenly across the outer ring and the inner face. Looking after it asks very little: a dry brush or a soft cloth around the rim whenever the ceiling gets dusted, and nothing solvent based or gritty, both of which will dull the finish.
