Description

A lampshade, 35cm wide, in green. The shade is the part of a light that changes the room, and it is also the part that is easiest to get wrong: too small and the fitting shows, too large and it dominates. The bottom diameter is the figure to hold against the space, not the height. At 35cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Changing a shade changes a room without touching the wiring, which makes it the cheapest worthwhile change in a house you have just moved into.

A natural surface lightens or mellows slightly with sunlight over a few years. That is the material ageing rather than the finish failing, and most people prefer it at five years to how it looked at one. Polyester holds colour better than any natural fibre. It does not fade in a sunlit room, does not shrink, and takes a wipe rather than a wash, which is why it is the fibre of choice where a fabric has to last. It is lined in gold, PVC: an unlined shade throws the outline of the bulb onto the wall, a lined one turns it into an even wash. Shade reducer: Yes.

The light you actually see is the light that comes THROUGH the shade, not the light from the bulb. That is why the same bulb reads warm behind a cream fabric and cold behind a white one.
