Description
This steampunk skull figurine wears a fur-trimmed aviator's flying helmet, with a pair of goggles pushed up on top and a winged emblem at the brow. It is cast in resin and finished mostly in brown, the panelled leather-look cap and earflaps set against a bone-beige skull. Small cogs and gears fill the eye sockets, tiny rivets sit at the nose, and a bent pipe hooks through the jaw, while the goggles carry silver and brass-tone rims. One side of the helmet holds a little machine of gears, a crank and a coiled spring, and a strap with a buckle runs round the back. It stands 17cm tall, 15.5cm wide and 14cm deep.
At 17cm tall it sits comfortably on a bookshelf, a desk or a mantelpiece, and its 15.5cm width leaves room beside it for a few books. The detail runs all the way round, so it looks as good from the side or the back as from the front, which suits an open shelf where it will be seen from more than one angle. It brings a dark, playful note to a study, a hallway or a games room, and it sits happily alongside clocks, old maps and brass pieces in a room with a Victorian, mechanical feel.
Resin holds fine detail well, which is why the fur texture, the panel seams of the cap and the teeth of each cog read so crisply. It is a freestanding piece that needs no fixing or wall space. To keep it looking its best, dust it with a soft dry cloth or a small soft brush that reaches into the gears and the fur texture, and wipe it gently with a damp cloth if needed. For styling, we like it on a dark wooden shelf under a warm lamp, where the brass-tone details catch the light and shadows settle into the eye sockets.
