Description

The St Martins is a solid brass outdoor wall lantern with clear glass panels on three sides, housing a single E27 candle bulb (sold separately) behind a pagoda-style brass canopy. The aged brass finish shows brush marks and intentional tonal variation across the metalwork, giving the piece a pre-patinated appearance that references Georgian coach lanterns without being a literal reproduction.

Designed for porch lighting, front door entrances, and sheltered external walls, the lantern projects 80mm from the wall and casts light through the glass panels onto the wall surface and downward onto the doorstep. The IP44 rating provides protection against solid objects above 1mm and water splashes from any direction, making it suitable for locations under eaves, porch canopies, and covered walkways where direct rainfall is minimal. The 305mm height suits standard domestic porches and smaller entrance alcoves without overpowering the doorway.

The solid brass construction gives the lantern a 1.8kg weight that feels substantial on fixing. The aged finish is applied during manufacture and will continue to develop natural patina over time, deepening the tone and adding green-brown oxidation where the brass is exposed to moisture. The clear glass panels are flat-cut rather than bevelled, keeping the focus on the brass frame rather than decorative glasswork. Elstead Lighting backs the St Martins with a lifetime guarantee on the metalwork.

Frequently Asked

What IP rating does it carry and where can it be installed?

The St Martins is rated IP44, providing protection against solid objects above 1mm and water splashes from any direction. This makes it suitable for installation under eaves, porch canopies and covered entrance alcoves where it is sheltered from direct rainfall. It is not rated for fully exposed positions subject to prolonged rain or water jets.

What bulb does it take?

The lantern takes a standard E27 candle bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED candle bulb between 4-6W and 2200K-2700K to match the aged brass tone and give a period-appropriate filament glow.

Will the brass finish change over time?

Yes. The aged brass finish is applied during manufacture but will continue to develop natural patina when exposed to outdoor air and moisture. Over months and years the brass will darken and may develop green-brown oxidation in areas exposed to rain splash. This is a characteristic of solid brass and part of the intended aesthetic.

What fixing method is used?

The lantern fixes to an external wall via a backplate with two fixing holes. Screws and wall plugs suitable for masonry are typically required (not supplied). The solid brass construction weighs approximately 1.8kg, so ensure the wall substrate can support the load.
