Description

The Solar is a 110mm diameter surface-mounted downlight in a grey powder-coated aluminium housing with a transparent Pyrex glass diffuser. The fitting takes a single GU10 bulb (sold separately) and is rated IP44 for protection against water splashes and dust ingress. The cylindrical housing stands approximately 110mm tall from the mounting surface and projects the light downward through the glass lens.

Designed for both indoor and outdoor installation, the IP44 rating makes the Solar suitable for bathroom zones 1 and 2, covered porches, eaves, and other locations where moisture and dust protection is needed but not full immersion. The surface-mount design means no ceiling recess is required, making it a practical choice for solid concrete ceilings, soffits, and locations where recessed fittings cannot be installed. The downlight mounts via a rear baseplate that fixes to the ceiling or soffit surface with standard screws.

The grey finish is a mid-tone neutral that pairs with both light and dark wall colours, blending into grey render, weathered timber cladding and white-painted ceilings without strong visual contrast. The Pyrex glass diffuser is toughened and heat-resistant, allowing the fitting to be used with both LED and halogen GU10 bulbs without thermal stress on the glass. The aluminium construction and sealed glass-to-body join give the fitting a working life beyond five years in typical outdoor exposure conditions.

What bulb does it take and is it included?

The Solar takes a standard GU10 bulb with a maximum rating specified by Ideal Lux (typically 35-50W for halogen or 5-7W for LED). Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED GU10 between 5-7W for outdoor or bathroom use.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes. The IP44 rating protects against water splashes and dust, making it suitable for covered outdoor locations such as porches, eaves, carports and canopies. It is not rated for full exposure to driving rain or submersion, so it should be installed under some form of cover.

Is it dimmable?

Dimmer compatibility depends on the GU10 bulb you install. The fitting itself supports dimming when paired with a dimmable GU10 bulb and a compatible dimmer switch. Non-dimmable LED bulbs will not dim even with a dimmer installed.

What bathroom zones is it suitable for?

The IP44 rating makes the Solar suitable for bathroom zones 1 and 2 (directly above the bath/shower and within 60cm horizontally of the bath/shower). It is not rated for zone 0 (inside the bath or shower enclosure itself).
