Description

A lampshade, 45cm wide, in cream. The shade is the part of a light that changes the room, and it is also the part that is easiest to get wrong: too small and the fitting shows, too large and it dominates. The bottom diameter is the figure to hold against the space, not the height. At 45cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door.

Natural sits with almost anything, which is the practical argument for it: it does not commit the room to a colour scheme the way a painted finish does. Steel carries a load through a thinner section than any timber can, which is why a steel frame can look this light and still not flex. Powder-coated, it takes a knock as a chip rather than a dent. It is lined in white PVC: an unlined shade throws the outline of the bulb onto the wall, a lined one turns it into an even wash. The shade tapers from 45cm at the bottom to 23cm at the top. Shade reducer: Yes.

Two shades of the same size can light a room completely differently depending on how open the top and bottom are. A narrow top pushes light down into a pool; a wide one lets it wash the ceiling as well.
