Description

This round scented candle carries a shaggy Highland cow on the front of its warm, translucent amber-brown jar, with the scent of an apple orchard waiting under the lid. The cow is drawn in loose, painterly strokes of russet, chestnut and cream. Its fringe falls over its eyes, its pale horns curve up towards the rim, and a light scatter of coloured dots crosses the brown. It is a 250g candle standing about 11.8cm tall, 7.8cm wide and 8.2cm deep, and a pale round lid sits on top to close it between burns.

We like it on a living room shelf, a bedroom chest of drawers or the side table by a favourite armchair, where the cow can look out into the room. The back of the jar is a plain, smoky brown that deepens towards the base, so the candle sits as happily against a wall or a mirror with its painted face turned outward. The apple orchard fragrance suits a kitchen dresser or a hallway console too. The shaggy Highland cow brings a little of the country to a town flat as readily as to a farmhouse. As a present it needs little more than a ribbon.

Inside, the wax is a blend of 70% soy wax and 30% paraffin wax, with a burn time of 50 hours, so one candle sees you through plenty of evenings. On the first lighting, let it burn until the melted pool reaches the edges. Trim the wick before each use, and stand it on a stable, heat-proof surface away from draughts, children and pets. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Once the flame is out and the jar has cooled, put the lid back on to keep the surface clean, and dust the jar and lid with a soft dry cloth. Set it beside a stack of books and a warm throw for an easy autumn corner.
