Roscoe 1 Light Outdoor Wall Lantern - Black

The Roscoe is a 342mm outdoor wall lantern built around a rectangular frame of weather-resistant composite material finished in matt black, with white opal glass panels on three sides and a rectangular handle detail at the top. An E27 bulb fitting (sold separately) sits inside the opal glass enclosure, which diffuses light across all three glazed faces. The lantern carries an IP44 rating for outdoor use in exposed positions.

Designed for porch entries, courtyard walls, garage exteriors and garden pathways where a wall-mounted light source is needed, the Roscoe combines the proportions of a traditional coach lantern with simplified detailing. The 178mm projection from the wall and 191mm width suit walls where a medium-scale fitting is required without dominating the elevation. The composite construction resists corrosion and weathering in coastal and damp environments where metal fittings might degrade.

The matt black finish provides a low-sheen surface that hides minor weathering and pairs with both traditional masonry and modern render or cladding. The white opal glass softens the light output and prevents direct bulb glare, while the striated detailing on the black frame breaks up the flat surfaces and adds shadow lines under daylight. What does the IP44 rating mean?

IP44 means the lantern is protected against solid objects larger than 1mm and against water splashes from any direction. This makes it suitable for installation on exposed exterior walls, porches, and garden structures where it will encounter rain and wind-blown moisture.

What bulb should I use?

The Roscoe takes a standard E27 bulb up to 60W, sold separately. Most users fit a warm-white LED bulb between 8-12W and 2700K-3000K for outdoor ambient lighting. The opal glass diffuses the light, so filament-style decorative bulbs are less visible than in clear-glass lanterns.

Is the composite material as durable as metal?

The composite construction resists corrosion and weathering better than painted steel or aluminium in coastal and damp environments. It does not rust, pit or require repainting, and the matt black finish is moulded through the material rather than applied as a surface coat.

Can it be mounted upside down?

The rectangular handle detail at the top is a design feature rather than a functional handle. Mounting the lantern upside down would place this detail at the bottom, which would alter the intended proportions and appearance.
