Description

The Roots is a 35cm pendant light built from layered plywood ribs that slot together to form a bulbous oval shade, suspended from a matt black metal canopy on a fabric-wrapped black cable. The shade is constructed from 5-layer plywood sheets, each rib running vertically from top to bottom and fanning out to create the rounded profile. The natural beige tone of the plywood is preserved under a protective lacquer coating, and the gaps between the ribs allow light to filter through in vertical slats.

Designed for kitchens, dining tables, breakfast bars and bedroom pendant positions, the Roots pairs well with Scandi, mid-century and contemporary interiors that layer natural materials with black metal accents. The adjustable cable drop ranges from 50.5cm to 340.5cm on installation, allowing the pendant to be hung low over a dining table or higher in rooms with taller ceilings. The 35cm diameter makes it suitable as a single focal point over a small dining table for two, or clustered in pairs or threes over a longer surface. The E27 fitting accepts any standard Edison screw bulb up to 40W (sold separately).

The layered plywood construction gives the shade structural rigidity without requiring internal bracing, and the vertical slat pattern casts striped shadows onto nearby walls and ceilings when lit. The matt black finish on the canopy and cable contrasts with the warm beige wood without competing for attention. The Roots takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 40W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2200K-2700K to complement the natural beige wood tone.

Can the drop height be adjusted after installation?

The cable drop is set during installation to a length between 50.5cm and 340.5cm. Once the canopy is fixed to the ceiling rose, shortening or lengthening requires accessing the canopy again and re-routing the cable.

Is the plywood shade durable?

The shade is constructed from 5-layer plywood coated with a protective lacquer to resist moisture absorption and surface marking. The ribs slot together without glue or fixings, so the shade can be disassembled for transport or storage if needed.

Can it be used in a bathroom?

No. The IP20 rating limits the fitting to dry indoor locations only. It is not suitable for bathrooms, outdoor canopies, conservatories or other damp environments.
