Description
This sitting elephant figurine shows its subject with trunk raised high, mouth open and ears fanned wide either side of a glossy black eye, as though calling out across open country. Every surface is sculpted into small faceted blocks and fine cracked ridges, giving the whole piece the look of a weathered hide picked out in chunky planes. The colour is a warm brown with terracotta tones, lifted by off-white and grey highlights on the trunk, ears, tusks and feet, so the texture reads with real depth from every angle. It is made from resin, sometimes called polystone, and stands 39.5cm tall, 18cm wide and 16cm deep.
At 39.5cm tall it has enough presence to be seen from across a room, so it suits a sideboard, a hall console, a deep windowsill or the top of a bookcase. Its seated base, 18cm wide and 16cm deep, also fits neatly on a mantelpiece or the corner of a desk in a study. The earthy brown sits happily alongside natural textures such as wood, rattan, linen and green plants, and it brings a touch of the wild to a living room or reading corner without taking over.
The figure is freestanding on its own seated base, so it needs no stand or wall fixing. As the trunk reaches out from the body, we would place it where it will not be knocked by passing elbows or bags. Care is simple: dust it with a soft dry cloth, using a soft brush to reach into the grooves, and wipe it with a barely damp cloth if needed. For the best effect, stand it at eye level and turn it slightly so the lifted trunk and fanned ear face into the room.
