Description
This stoneware jug carries a shaggy highland cow on its front, raised from the surface and painted in warm ginger-brown with a soft pink nose, dark little hooves and pale horns peeping out from under its fringe. The body is a clean white glaze with a gently rounded belly, a wide pouring lip and a generous loop handle, while the back is left plain so the cow has the stage to itself. It stands 19.5cm tall, 18.5cm across and 11cm deep, and holds 1750ml.
On the kitchen table it makes a cheerful pouring jug for breakfast or Sunday lunch, and 1750ml means there is plenty to go round. Between meals it doubles as a country-style vase on a dresser, windowsill or sideboard, where a handful of fresh flowers or dried stems in autumn shades picks up the warm tones of the cow's coat. It sits happily in a farmhouse or cottage kitchen and adds a friendly face to a plain shelf. Wrapped up, it makes a lovely present for a kitchen that could do with a little countryside character.
The jug is made from stoneware under a smooth, glossy glaze, and the cow is moulded in relief, so you can feel the ridges of its shaggy coat under your fingertips. The loop handle is wide enough for a comfortable grip, and the jug sits steadily on its flat base. To keep it looking its best, we suggest washing it gently by hand in warm soapy water and drying it with a soft cloth, taking care around the raised detail. Because the cow sits on one side only, turn it to face the room on a shelf or dresser, and set it beside plain white crockery to let that ginger coat do the talking.
