Description

A lampshade, 30cm wide, in cream. A tapered shade throws more light down than out, which is what you want over a reading chair and not what you want if the lamp is the only light in the room. At 30cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Changing a shade changes a room without touching the wiring, which makes it the cheapest worthwhile change in a house you have just moved into.

A natural, unpainted finish shows the material doing its own work — the grain, the weave or the fibre is the decoration, and no two pieces are identical because no two lengths of the raw material are. Cotton breathes and softens with use, and it takes dye in a way that reads warmer than a synthetic of the same colour. It creases, which is either the charm or the objection depending on the room. It is lined in white, PVC: an unlined shade throws the outline of the bulb onto the wall, a lined one turns it into an even wash. The shade tapers from 30cm at the bottom to 13cm at the top.
