A wall light, 34cm wide, in antique bronze. At 34cm wide it is about the width of a laptop.

A warm metal finish reflects light yellow rather than white, which is why gold and brass make a room feel warmer at the same brightness. It also reads as softer against warm woods and darker paint, where a cool finish can look stark. Brass warms a room in a way chrome and steel do not, because it reflects light yellow rather than white. Unlacquered, it will darken slowly and unevenly with handling, which most people come to prefer.

E14 lampholders, 2 of them up to 6-9W LED, and no bulb in the box. Because it is E14, bulbs are stocked everywhere and you are never tied to one supplier. It is dimmable, so the level is set at the wall rather than fixed at the bulb. The head adjusts, so you can aim the light at a book rather than a ceiling. A Candle shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

A shade does two jobs at once and they pull against each other: it hides the bulb from your eye, and it decides how much light escapes sideways rather than up and down. A dense fabric does the first well and the second hardly at all. A fabric shade fades from the inside out rather than the outside in, because the bulb is closer than the window. A lining slows that considerably, which is most of what a lining is for.
